Enrolment Policy

Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is made on the basis of a selection test designed and conducted by CBSE. The test is called Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). It is non-verbal in nature, class-neutral and designed to ensure that talented children from rural areas are able to compete without facing any harm. Special care is taken to ensure that children from far flung areas get free admission cards without any difficulty. Adequate publicity is done through Doordarshan, All India Radio, local newspapers, pamphlets, school websites and through the principals and teachers of Navodaya Vidyalayas in the local schools of the district.

जवाहर नवोदय विद्यालय में प्रवेश सीबीएसई द्वारा डिज़ाइन और संचालित चयन परीक्षा के आधार पर किया जाता है। परीक्षण को जवाहर नवोदय विद्यालय चयन परीक्षा (JNVST) कहा जाता है। यह प्रकृति में गैर-मौखिक, वर्ग-तटस्थ है और यह सुनिश्चित करने के लिए डिज़ाइन किया गया है कि ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के प्रतिभाशाली बच्चे बिना किसी नुकसान का सामना किए प्रतिस्पर्धा करने में सक्षम हों। दूर-दराज के क्षेत्रों के बच्चों को बिना किसी परेशानी के नि:शुल्क प्रवेश पत्र मिले इसका विशेष ध्यान रखा जाता है। जिले के स्थानीय विद्यालयों में दूरदर्शन, आकाशवाणी, स्थानीय समाचार पत्रों, पैम्फलेटों, विद्यालयों की वेबसाइटों तथा नवोदय विद्यालयों के प्रधानाध्यापकों एवं शिक्षकों के माध्यम से पर्याप्त प्रचार-प्रसार किया जाता है।

Eligibility conditions

For all the candidates

Only candidates from the district where Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya has been opened are eligible to apply for admission. However, the district in which JNV is opened and bifurcated at a later date, the old boundaries of the district are considered for the purpose of eligibility for entry into JNV. This applies to cases where new schools have not yet been started in the new bifurcated district.
'B' Certificate Competition Course of a Government / Government-aided, other recognized school or National Institute of Open Schooling, to the candidates appearing for the selection examination, in the same district where / she seeks admission.
A school will be recognized if it is declared by the government or by some other agency authorized on behalf of the government. Schools, where students have obtained 'B' certificate under the National Institute of Open Schooling, must have NIOS accreditation. A candidate must successfully complete Class-V. Actual admission to Class-VI will be subject to these conditions.
Candidates seeking admission must be within 9 to 13 years of age. This applies to all categories of candidates, including Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
The candidate claiming admission from rural quota must have studied and passed Class-III, IV and V from the Government. Aided / accredited schools spend a full academic session every year in a school located in a rural area.
A candidate who has studied in a school located in an urban area, even for one day of session in any class-III, IV or V, will be considered as a candidate for the urban area. Urban areas are those notified through the 2001 census or subsequent government notification. All other areas will be considered rural.
A candidate who has not been promoted before 30 September and admitted to Class-V is not eligible to apply.
No candidate is eligible to appear in the JNV Selection Exam for the second time under any circumstances.

Reservation for rural, SC / ST, girls and disabled children

At least 75% of the seats in a district will be filled by candidates selected from rural areas and the remaining seats from the urban areas of the district.
There is a provision for reservation of seats for SC and ST candidates in proportion to their population in the district but not below the national average.
1/3 seats are reserved for girl students.
There is a provision to reserve 3% seats for children with disabilities (ie orthopedically handicapped, hearing impaired and visually handicapped).

In order to make better use of the basic facilities and staff facilities available in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, vacant seats in class-nine are filled through the lateral entry test. During the year 2016-17, the Lateral Entry Test for Class-IX was conducted at 550 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.

Eligibility conditions
To appear in the selection test, a candidate must fulfill the following eligibility conditions:

Only those candidates who have studied in class VIII. Accredited schools in the district where JNV is working can get admission in class IX.
The selection of the candidate seeking admission should be between the age group of 13-16 years on the first of May of the year of the entrance examination. This applies to all categories of candidates, including those belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The medium of language for the examination is English / Hindi.

The entrance examination consists of questions of class-VIII in the following subjects.

The center for JNVST class-IX examination is Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in the respective district.

Local admission for Class-XI

Notification issued for admission in class-XI
The vacant seats available in each JNV are notified in the local newspapers every year by the JNV belonging to that district. Admission to class-XI is completed by 15th July every year.
Eligibility for admission in class-XI
Students seeking admission in class XI should be within the age limit of 14-18 years on the first July of the year of admission.
The candidate should have passed class X from a recognized school in the district (affiliated to CBSE or any other state board of education) where JNV is located during the academic session of the year of admission.
The merit list will be prepared according to the marks obtained by the applicant in the Class-X board examination and admission will be given according to the qualification of the candidate and the seats available in the respective JNVs.
Candidates should have proper qualification in English and Hindi.
