The unique feature of the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme is the migration of students from one Navodaya Vidyalaya to another linguistic area in a particular linguistic area to promote an understanding of the diversity and plurality of India's culture and people.
According to this scheme, 30% of children from one JNV at class-IX level are transferred to another JNV for one academic year.
Migration usually takes place between Hindi speaking and non-Hindi speaking districts. With a modest start in 1988-89 with only 2 JNVs and 31 displaced students, the scheme has grown from strength to strength over the last 28 years, making it one of the biggest success stories in the field of schooling in India is.
Migration - The exchange program of 30% students at class-IX level for one year between JNVs belonging to different linguistic regions is an important feature of the committee to promote national unity. This scheme provides for the implementation of the three language formula.
The third language is taught in Hindi-speaking districts and is associated with migration of students. In Hindi speaking districts, the third language taught at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is the language of 30% of the students transferred to that JNV from non-Hindi areas.
This language is compulsory for all. In non-Hindi areas, Navodaya Vidyalayas follow the common three-language formula i.e. regional language, Hindi and English.
