Enrolment Policy

Admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is made on the basis of a Selection Test, designed and conducted by the CBSE. The test is called the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). It is of non-verbal nature, class-neutral and designed so as to ensure that talented children from rural areas are able to compete without facing any disadvantage. Special care is taken to ensure that children from far flung areas get admission forms free of cost, without any difficulty. Sufficient publicity is done through Doordarshan, All India Radio, local newspapers, pamphlets, Vidyalaya websites and through visits of Principals and teachers of Navodaya Vidyalayas to the local schools of the district.

Eligibility Conditions and Composition of the Test

Eligibility conditions

For All Candidates

1.Only candidates from the district where Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya has been opened are eligible to apply for admission. However, the district in which the JNV is opened and divided at a later date, the old boundaries of the district are considered for the purpose of eligibility for entry into the JNV. This applies to cases where a new school has not yet been started in the newly divided district.                 

2.Candidates appearing for the selection test should study in Class-V for the entire academic session in 'B' Certificate Qualification Course of Government / Government aided, other recognized school or National Institute of Open Schooling, in the same district where it / She wants admission.A school shall be deemed to be accredited if it is declared by the Government or by any other agency authorized on behalf of the Government. Schools where students have obtained 'B' certificate under National Institute of Open Schooling, must have NIOS accreditation. A candidate must successfully complete Class-V. Actual admission to Class-VI will be subject to these conditions.  

3.Candidates seeking admission must be between 9 and 13 years of age. This applies to all categories of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

4.Candidates claiming admission from rural quota should study and pass class-III, IV and V from Govt. / Govt. Aided / accredited schools spend one full academic session each year in a school located in a rural area.

5.A candidate who has studied in any one of the Class-III, IV or V for one day of a session in a school located in an urban area shall be considered as an urban area candidate. Urban areas are those which have been notified as such in the 2001 census or through subsequent government notification. All other areas will be considered rural.

6.A candidate who has not been promoted before September 30 and has not been admitted to Class-V, is not eligible to apply.

7.No candidate is eligible to appear in the JNV selection exam for the second time under any circumstances.

Reservation for Rural, SC/ST, Girls & Disabled Children

1.At least 75% of the seats in a district will be filled by selected candidates from rural areas and the remaining seats will be filled from the urban areas of the district.

2.There is a provision for reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates in the district in proportion to their population but not below the national average!

3.1/3 seats are reserved for girl students.

4.There is a provision for reservation of 3% seats for disabled children (i.e. Orthopedically Handicapped, Hearing Impaired and Visually Handicapped). 

Test structure

The medium of examination (JNVST) will be in any of the notified 21 languages.

To make optimum use of the infrastructure and staff facilities available in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, the vacant seats in class-IX are filled up through lateral entrance examination. During the year 2020-21, lateral entrance examination for class-IX was conducted in 550 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

Eligibility conditions

To appear in the selection test, a candidate must fulfill the following eligibility conditions:

  • Only those candidates who have studied in class-VIII in any one of the Govt. / Govt. The recognized school in the district where JNV is working can take admission in the ninth grade.

  • The age of the candidate seeking admission should be between 13-16 years of age on 1 May of the year of admission for which the selection test is conducted. This applies to all categories of candidates including Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates.

  • The medium of language for the examination is English / Hindi.

 

Exam Structure for Class-IX

The entrance examination consists of questions of class-VIII in the following subjects.

The exam is conducted in objective / descriptive duration of 3 hours without any pause.

JNVST Center for Class-IX

The center of JNVST class-IX examination is Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in the respective district.

Reservation

The existing vacant seats in SC / ST category, as notified, are reserved for SC / ST students.

Lateral entry for class-XI

Issuing notification for admission in class XI

  • The vacant seats available in each JNV are notified every year in the local newspapers by the respective JNVs of that district. Admission to class-XI is completed by 15th of July every year.

Eligibility for admission to class XI

  • 1.Students seeking admission in class-XI should be within the age limit of 14-18 years on July 1 of the year of admission.
  • 2.The candidate should have passed class X from a recognized school in the district (affiliated to CBSE or any other state board of education), where JNV is located during the academic session of the year of admission.
  • 3.The merit list will be prepared according to the marks obtained by the applicant in the Class X board examination and admission will be given according to the eligibility of the candidate and the seats available in the respective JNVs.
  • 4.Candidates should have proper qualification in English and Hindi.
