"A HOME AWAY FROM HOME"
The National Policy of Education-1986 envisaged the establishment of pace setting schools in various parts of the country. Accordingly, a scheme was formulated under which it was decided to set up residential schools called Navodaya Vidyalayas on the average of one in each district. The school allotted to Kottayam district of Kerala State was initially started functioning in August 1987 at Government High school Paippad, Changanassery, Kottayam subsequently it was shifted to the permanent site at Vadavathoor in June 1991 where the Vidyalaya is presently functioning.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kottayam is a fully residential & co-educational school administered by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India. The Vidyalaya is affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi and having classes from VI to XII. Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is made to Class VI on the basis of a Selection Test, designed and conducted by the CBSE. The test is called the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). It is of non-verbal nature, class-neutral and designed so as to ensure that talented children from rural areas are able to compete without facing any disadvantage. The education in the school is free including boarding & lodging, uniforms and textbooks etc. However, a sum of Rs. 600/- per month is to be paid only by the students of classes IX to XII towards Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN). The students belonging to SC/ST categories, all Girl students, and the students whose family income is below poverty line (BPL) are exempted from paying this VVN. In the case of children of Govt. Employees, other than the exempted category (Students of classes V to VIII, all SC/ST & Girls students and the wards of BPL families), VVN to be paid @ Rs. 1500/- per month.
The Vidyalaya is situated at Vadavathoor, which is a distance of 6 kms from Kottayam district headquarters. The Vidyalaya is accessible by road on Kottayam Kumili Road (KK Road). The Vidyalaya has an area of 24 acres of land in which various infrastructural facilities like Academic building, Play grounds, separate dormitories for Boys and Girls, Kitchen and Dining Halls, Staff quarters for all the staff members and other facilities are available. At the time of admission, Students are allotted to four houses namely Aravali, Nilgiri, Shivalik, Udaigiri and represent the colours of blue, green, red and yellow respectively. At Plus Two level, the vidyalaya has 2 streams: Science and Commerce.
JNV Kottayam is easily reachable from the Kottayam city. It is located at 6 Kms from the Kottayam Railway station. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport at a distance of 90 kms.
