The only mode of admission in Class -VI of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection test popularly known as JNVST organised for the students studying in class - V in any of the recoginized school of the District in which the JNV is located. To appear in the test students has to fill an online form through the web site for which wide publicity is done via print & electronic media and by other modes. For the vacant seats if any a similar test also organised for the admission in class -IX.
The medium of the Test (JNVST) will be in any language out of 21 languages as notified.

In order to optimally utilise the infrastructure and staff facilities available in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, vacant seats in Class-IX are filled up through Lateral Entry Test. An external agency is responsible for setting up of question papers, processing the result, preparation of selection list etc. The Regional officer of the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti with the assistance of officials of concerned State/UT Government education department conduct the test in 813 centres located in 28 States and 07 Union Territories.
To appear in the Selection Test, a candidate has to fulfill the following eligibility conditions :
Admission Test consists of questions of Class-VIII standard in the following subjects.

The test is conducted in objective/descriptive of type 3 hours duration without any break.
The Centre for the JNVST Class-IX Examination is Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya of the respective district.
The existing vacant seats in the SC/ST category, as notified, are reserved for the SC/ST students.
The vacant seats available in each JNV is notified every year in the local newspapers by the JNV concerned of that district. The admission in Class–XI is completed by 15th July every year.
