Academics and Quality of Education
A particular Navodaya Vidyalaya usually provides two streams among Science, Arts and Commerce for Class XI and XII. JNVs are known for their academic excellence, which can be contributed to their merit-based entrance test and unique climate provided to otherwise disadvantaged children, and which is further proved by their performance at board examinations.
Three Language Formula
To facilitate migration every JNV teaches three languages in class VI to Class IX. These languages are grouped into A Level and B-I and B-II Level. The pattern followed in different categories of states is as shown in the table below. However, CBSE mandates for children to study two languages only. Therefore students of each category of states appear for A Level and B-I level languages at CBSE examinations.

Board Results
Navodaya Vidyalaya has consistently produced best results in CBSE Board Examinations over the years. In 2015-16 results, JNVs had a pass percentage of, 98.87% in Class X board exams and 96.73% in Class XII board exams. The pass percentage for JNVs has been higher than independent private schools, government schools and even Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Smart Classes
Navodaya Vidyalaya in collaboration with Samsung India has setup smart classes in 373 JNVs since 2013 upto 2016 end. Typically a Smart Class is equipped with an interactive Smartboard, laptops/tablets, Wi-Fi connectivity and power backup. Smart Class supplements regular lessons in mathematics, science and social science to explain concepts in an engaging and interactive manner. Teachers are trained to use the equipment effectively and impart computer education.
The medium of the Test (JNVST) will be in any language out of 21 languages as notified.

In order to optimally utilise the infrastructure and staff facilities available in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, vacant seats in Class-IX are filled up through Lateral Entry Test. During the year 2016-17, Lateral Entry Test for Class-IX was conducted in 550 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
To appear in the Selection Test, a candidate has to fulfill the following eligibility conditions :
Admission Test consists of questions of Class-VIII standard in the following subjects.

The test is conducted in objective/descriptive of type 3 hours duration without any break.
The Centre for the JNVST Class-IX Examination is Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya of the respective district.
The existing vacant seats in the SC/ST category, as notified, are reserved for the SC/ST students.
The vacant seats available in each JNV is notified every year in the local newspapers by the JNV concerned of that district. The admission in Class–XI is completed by 15th July every year.
