The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya established in 1986. Under the principal ship of Sh. L. R. Guru the Vidyalaya started functioning in a temporary site at Porbandar palace from 1 April 1987. The JNV Porbandar shifted to permanent campus on 20 August 1989 which happens to be the birthday of his visionary late sh. Rajiv Gandhi, who started JNVs across India.

                                                    Porbandar is a city and district place having only three talukas with historical as well as cultural importance. Porbandar is known for “KIRTI MANDIR” birth place of Mahatma Gandhi father of our nation as well as Sudama, a friend of Lord Krishna (There are lots of famous stories of Krishna Sudama friendship in our scriptures.) The school campus covers around 33 acres of land from where one can see scenario of Bardo Dungar (Hills) and on the other side Arabian Sea is very much near to JNV Porbandar with it Chowpati. The school campus is full of different trees which enhances beauty of the campus. The campus includes beautiful staff quarters and newly and refurbished student’s hostels. The academic building, including several classroom, computer lab, Samsung smart room, biology lab, chemistry lab, physics lab, geography lab.

                                                     The wide spread use of email and an Intranet system shrinks the distances and keeps staff, students and administration in quick and easy contact with one another. The Vidyalaya is located near the main Rajkot-Porbandar National highway (NH-27) at Dharampur patiya. The Vidyalaya is very much near to domestic airport which is 2 km of distance. Distance from Railway station to Vidyalaya campus is about 8 km. The famous Hindu pilgrimage’s centres Somnath and Dwarka are equidistance from Porbandar in opposite direction i.e. Somnath on the eastern side and Dwarka on the western. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas namely Nageshwara Jyotirlinga is also located near Dwarka. Many faithful followers keep thronging these places of worship throughout the year.

                                                       Porbandar is a garrison city has presence of almost all armour forces Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast-guard, Marine Police and Sagar Suraksha Dal having watched men in uniform. The young students of JNV Porbandar are also inspired and naval wing of NCC gives them the necessary platform to dream big thus our Vidyalaya is heading towards the newer horizons.
