Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Barahiya, Lakhisarai was established in July 2006 during the academic session 2006-07 under the aegis of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organization under Department of School Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India with a motto and high ideal of “ Pragyan Brahma” a Sanskrit hymn from Aaiterya Upanishad of Rigved which literally means “Supreme knowledge is Divine”. The first batch in class VI comprising 53 students who were the students of JNV, Sheikhpura and were the residents of Lakhisarai districts were sent to the newly established vidyalaya. The vidyalaya system was established as a flagship brand for the upliftment of talented and gifted children predominantly from the rural areas as a part of the stakeholder’s holistic and all round development in each and every sphere of their life. The Vidyalaya system functions as a co educational residential set up where one third students are mandatorily girl students. Special arrangements for intake are provisioned as per the granted constitutional norms for providing social justice to the weaker sections like girls child, backward and depressed and underprivileged classes, divyaangs and transgenders. The vidyalaya is affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education upto +2 level.

The vidyalaya system provides a strong component of old aged culture and customs, inculcation of several fundamental values, awareness towards society and environment, nurturing soft skills and activities like games, sports, music and art education along with the programme of adolescence and development of multiple intelligences like physical, bodily, social, emotional, moral, spiritual, ethical etc. The safety and security concerns of the learners in this modern gurukul is the foremost attention of the vidyalaya family being monitored by the teachers as wardens and assisted by matron.
Now a days the educationists, pedagogists and policy makers have realized that real life learning happen outside the classroom and it is a matter of great pride that our system has environed the same more than 3 decades ago, which will remain relevant , significant and effective in the coming times.
It is a historical fact that quality education had been a luxury and comfortable entitlement for urban and wealthy families. The rural households remained underprivileged and struggled a lot even to access to best school education. Our system resembles the ancient traditional gurukul system of schooling wherein gifted and talented children are selected through entrance test and provided with the best quality education along with cognitive development and interpersonal skills.
