Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is done on the basis of selection test designed and conducted by CBSE. The exam is called Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). It is non-verbal in nature, class-neutral and is designed to ensure that gifted children from rural areas are able to compete without facing any disadvantages. Special care is taken to ensure that children from far flung areas get the admit card free of cost without any difficulty. Adequate publicity is given through Doordarshan, All India Radio, local newspapers, pamphlets, Vidyalaya websites and through visits by the Principals and teachers of Navodaya Vidyalayas to the local schools of the district.
Only the candidates of the district where Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya has been opened are eligible to apply for admission. However, the district in which the JNV has been opened and bifurcated at a later date, the old boundaries of the district are considered for the purpose of eligibility for admission to the JNV. This applies to cases where a new school has not yet been started in the newly divided district.
Candidates appearing for the selection test must have studied in Class-V for the entire academic session in a Government/Government-aided, other recognized school or 'B' Certificate qualifying course of the National Institute of Open Schooling, in the same district where he/she is / She seeks admission. A school shall be deemed to be recognized if it is declared by the Government or by any other agency authorized by the Government. Schools where students have obtained 'B' certificate under National Institute of Open Schooling must have NIOS accreditation. A candidate must have successfully completed Class-V. Actual admission to Class-VI will be subject to these conditions.
The age of the candidate seeking admission should be between 9 to 13 years. It is applicable to all categories of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Candidate claiming admission from rural quota must have studied and passed Class-III, IV & V from Govt./ Govt. Aided / Accredited Schools spend one full academic session each year in a school located in a rural area.
A candidate who has studied in any one of Class-III, IV or V even for one day of a session in a school located in urban area shall be treated as a candidate from urban area. Urban areas are those which have been notified as such in the 2001 census or through a subsequent government notification. All other areas will be treated as rural.
A candidate who has not been promoted before 30th September and has not been admitted to Class-V is not eligible to apply.
No candidate is eligible to appear in the JNV Selection Test for the second time under any circumstances.
The medium of the Test (JNVST) will be in any language out of 21 languages as notified.

In order to optimally utilise the infrastructure and staff facilities available in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, vacant seats in Class-IX are filled up through Lateral Entry Test. During the year 2016-17, Lateral Entry Test for Class-IX was conducted in 550 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
To appear in the Selection Test, a candidate has to fulfill the following eligibility conditions :

The test is conducted in objective/descriptive of type 3 hours duration without any break.
The Centre for the JNVST Class-IX Examination is Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya of the respective district.
The existing vacant seats in the SC/ST category, as notified, are reserved for the SC/ST students.
The vacant seats available in each JNV is notified every year in the local newspapers by the JNV concerned of that district. The admission in Class–XI is completed by 15th July every year.
