Navodaya Vidyalaya system envisages a new style of growth and development aimed at the identification and development of talented, bright and gifted children predominantly from rural areas, and the attempt to provide them with quality education comparable to the best in a residential school  system. The Navodaya Vidyalaya scheme is perhaps the first major egalitarian step that has been taken to bring good education to the weakest sections. This was a quest for equality, the best schools for the best children, irrespective of their cultural and social backgrounds.

Besides academic excellence, the system aims at promoting strong component of culture, inculcation of values, awareness of environment, reasonable level of competence in three languages, consistent interaction with the local community and serving the respective districts as focal point for improving the quality of education through sharing of experiences. This system was conceived as an idea, a progressive forward looking concept in the National Policy of Education, 1986.Starting with two experimental schools in 1985-86, It has now grown to 596 schools spread all over the country. What is significant and notable , is in the process of this journey, the objectives were not lost sight of the progress of Navodaya Vidyalaya is marked b an extra ordinary achievement in the quality of education imparted in these schools. This  is a unique  school system where the traditionally marginalized groups get opportunities for  upward mobility through education.
